Randy Berggren to Retire from Role as EWEB General Manager

In a letter to Eugene Water and Electric Board commissioners, general manager Randy Berggren announced he will retire in May.

Berggren served in that position for 20 years and has been with EWEB for 24 years.

Commissioners have approved a contract with an executive recruiting firm to search for a new manager.

Bergen named the period of price volatility caused by the collapse of California’s efforts to deregulate the electricity market and the Enron scandal as the most difficult time during his tenure.

He oversaw the lengthy relicensing of the Carmen-Smith hydroelectric project, as well as the voting-in of the utility’s first union, in 2003, followed by a strike in 2006. Berggren said the organization has “come a long way” in building relationships with its employees.
