Expanded Panama Canal Could See More LNG Cargoes Expansion work on the Panama Canal, currently slated for completion in 2014, would permit 80 percent of LNG carriers to pass through the locks.
Currently only 6 percent of LNG tankers are able to pass through the locks of the canal and none actually utilize the route in practice, an official in the canal’s market research department told TradeWinds. The 50-mile canal links the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and could potentially be used to ship cargoes from Canada to customers in the Atlantic. TradeWinds also reports that Repsol YPF is considering using the waterway to move LNG out of Peru. |
