Mexico Will Use More Electricity, Natural Gas from LNG in Future Mexico’s Energy Ministry estimates that the nation will need to add 37,615 MW of new electricity capacity to keep up with demand growth and the retirement of over 10,315 MW of existing capacity.
Natural gas consumption is expected to increase 2.8 percent annually, largely due to demand from the oil and electricity industries.
As Mexico’s own production of natural gas will likely increase at a slower rate, the country will probably remain a net importer over the next 15 years.
By 2024, Mexico’s natural gas imports are expected to be 2.5 billion cubic feet per day. With two LNG regasification terminals currently in operation and a third slated to come online in 2011, the ministry said LNG imports were expected to increase from 367 million cubic feet per day in 2009 to 2 billion cubic feet per day by 2017. |
