Remaining Cook Inlet Gas Reserves May be Costly to Extract A new study by state officials suggests that there is adequate gas in Cook Inlet to supply the region for the next decade or so. However, that gas may not be economical to produce, says industry.
State Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin said that about 20 percent of the reserves’ original capacity remained. Because the most accessible gas has already been extracted, “The remaining gas may carry an increased cost,” said Irwin.
The study analyzed geological features and well data in order to estimate probable reserves in developed reservoirs. It did not attempt to address financial considerations related to the extraction of those reserves. Several officials in the industry suggested that the identified reserves might not be economical to extract. |
