Eugene Area Students Race with the Sun More than 300 local middle school students put their knowledge of solar energy and electric vehicles to the test on Saturday, June 12 in the 13th Annual EWEB Solar Challenge.
The event featured student-built model cars, powered by the sun and judged for speed and design.
Teams made of sixth, seventh and eighth grade science students tested their scientific know-how, creative thinking and inventiveness in the double elimination speed race. All students use a standardized solar electric panel and motor components, but are asked to use their imaginations to design the race cars. Each year, middle school students learn about electric vehicles and solar power through an in-depth science curriculum funded and sponsored by the EWEB Education Grant Program. The result of their creativity and learning is put to the test at the annual EWEB Solar Challenge race event. |
