Western Natural Gas Prices

Canadian Gas at Kingsgate, ID

The June 2010 average daily price of Canadian gas at Kingsgate, ID was $4.11/mmBtu.  This was 37 percent higher than the $3.00/mmBtu June 2009 average and 64 percent lower than the $11.52/mmBtu June 2008 average.

Rocky Mountain Gas at Opal, WY

The June 2010 average daily price of Rocky Mountain gas at Opal, WY was $4.11/mmBtu.  This was 64 percent higher than the $2.51/mmBtu June 2009 average and 51 percent lower than the $8.47/mmBtu June 2008 average.

Southwestern Gas at the Southern California Border

The June 2010 average daily price of Southwestern gas at the Southern California Border was $4.39/mmBtu.  This was 44 percent higher than the $3.06/mmBtu June 2009 average and 62 percent lower than the $11.62/mmBtu June 2008 average.

Working Gas in Western Underground Storage

Net gas injections for June 2010 totaled 54 Bcf, increasing Western underground storage levels to 448 Bcf.  This volume is 4.4 percent higher than the June 2009 storage level of 429 Bcf and 25 percent above the five year average June storage level of 357 Bcf.

Western Natural Gas Production

Natural gas production in the Western U.S. for the 12 months ending in June 2010 averaged 12.6 Bcf/day.  This was 1.1 percent lower than production for the comparable 2009 period and 7.6 percent higher than production for the comparable 2008 period.

The Western states rotary rig count for the week ending June 25, 2010 was 236, an increase of 85 rigs or 56 percent from the year-ago count.  It is a decrease of 22 percent from the five year average June rig count of 304.

Imports of Canadian natural gas into the Western U.S. for the 12 months ending in June 2010 averaged 2.7 Bcf/day. This was 14.5 percent higher than imports for the comparable 2009 period and 1.4 percent higher than imports for the comparable 2008 period.

Natural gas demand in the Western U.S. for the 12 months ending in June 2010 averaged 11.0 Bcf/day. This was 1.0 percent lower than demand for the comparable 2009 period and 4.0 percent lower than demand for the comparable 2008 period.
