Kill A Watt™ Meters Available At Libraries

Idaho Power, Avista Utilities, Rocky Mountain Power and the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL) are partnering to offer Energy Efficiency Kits for library visitors to check out. The utilities and the ICFL started the program as a way to help customers learn about their energy use and identify ways they can save money on their monthly electric bills. Each Energy Efficiency Kit includes a Kill A Watt™ meter, instructions on how to use the meter and energy saving tips.

A Kill A Watt™ meter is a device that can measure the energy consumption of appliances in a home. One of the ways customers can learn about their energy use is to measure how much energy they’re using. The Kill A Watt™ meter is easy to use: plug it into a standard three-prong electrical outlet, then plug the appliance into the meter. The meter will measure the amount of power being consumed, helping customers identify potential savings by either unplugging items when not in use, replacing the item with a more energy efficient model or recycling items.

In addition to learning about their energy use, customers can maximize their knowledge and efficiency by participating in an Idaho Power energy efficiency program—many offer a cash incentive. A customer with a spare refrigerator can plug it into the Kill A Watt™ meter and measure how much power it uses in a set time period. They can then determine the amount of electricity it consumes each month, and, using their current billing rate, discover how much money they can save by recycling their spare fridge through Idaho Power’s See Ya Later Refrigerator program, which pays customers $30 for their spare fridge or freezer. While any customer with a working spare fridge or freezer can get the $30 incentive for participating in See Ya later Refrigerator, customers that also use a Kill A Watt™ meter would know specifically how much they’re saving on their monthly bill.
