Obama Administration Moves Forward on Nuclear Waste Review Panel Former Congressman Lee Hamilton and former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft have been appointed by the Obama administration to oversee a commission that will evaluate nuclear waste disposal and storage options that do not include Yucca Mountain.
In an announcement, the Energy Department said the 15-member commission will be made up of scientists, industry representatives and former elected officials and that it would expressly be examining options other than the controversial Nevada repository.
Though Obama has repeatedly indicated he does not consider Yucca Mountain to be a viable option, some industry officials believe the site is being ruled out prematurely. The commission is slated to recommend alternatives in an interim report due within 18 months, with a final report to be completed in two years. |
