Draft Senate Climate Bill Gains Energy Industry Support Major players in the energy industry, including utility Exelon Corp. and oil companies ConocoPhillips and Royal Dutch Shell PLC, plan to back Senate climate-change legislation, reported Bloomberg in April.
A spokesman for General Electric Co. said the company believed the bill would represent “a step forward,” though it is reserving any commitments until the measure is finalized.
Unlike the House climate-change bill, the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman bill would initiate its cap-and-trade program with the regulation of electric utilities alone. Oil companies would be granted pollution allowances set to expire at a future date.
In addition to rumored support from oil companies, it was said that trade group the Edison Electric Institute would likely back the legislation. Environmental group Greenpeace has criticized the new Senate bill for provisions that would prevent the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions as well as suspend state and regional carbon-trading programs. |
