Lincoln City, Oregon Awarded First Smart Energy City by NW Natural
So perhaps it’s not a big surprise that this coastal city successfully completed the NW Natural Smart Energy Challenge, making it the very first Smart Energy City. In April city and community leaders accepted an award from NW Natural President and CEO, Gregg Kantor, on behalf of Lincoln City Smart Energy participants.
The people of Lincoln City have really stepped up and demonstrated their commitment to reducing their carbon emissions," said Gregg Kantor, President and CEO of NW Natural. “It is a testament to the city’s leadership and the character of this community as a whole. We are proud to recognize Lincoln City for making such an outstanding contribution to the environment.”
"The Oregon coast is uniquely vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and I believe more local government leaders should take strong steps in combating it,” said Lori Hollingsworth, Mayor of Lincoln City, who accepted the award. “We are extremely fortunate to have leaders and members of the community who are willing to take real, sustainable steps. I hope our city inspires other cities – big and small – to do what they can to live more sustainably.”
The Lincoln City Challenge Lincoln City signed up for the Smart Energy Challenge in the fall of 2009. The goal: to have five percent of NW Natural’s Lincoln City customers, commercial and residential, enrolled in Smart Energy by the end of the year. They made their goal – and more importantly will prevent 1,900 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to taking 330 cars off the road for a year – and all for less than 20 cents a day per customer. |
