Renewable Energy Certificates Market Growing Swiftly

A market in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) has emerged rapidly in recent years and, according to market research and consulting firm Pike Research, is poised to grow substantially in the future.

The RECs, which certify the generation of 1 megawatt-hour of green energy, are being traded by companies who are either seeking to demonstrate their commitment to environmental principles or comply with state-mandated Renewable Portfolio Standards.

Pike recently issued a report in which a base-case scenario would see the REC market grow more than 50 percent by 2015. In the scenario that includes a federally mandated RPS, the REC market would nearly triple in size.

The report examines the REC market’s key players, industry challenges, regulatory and policy impacts, and supply and demand patterns. It presents extensive data on the current REC market as well as forecasts for various policy scenarios.
