10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Driving Grid Innovation Through DER’s
Speakers: Juan Cardona, Senior Engineer, Salt River Project
John Gibson, Chief R&D Engineer, Manager of Distribution Services, Avista Utilities
Our Grid is being re-engineered to handle distributed resources and deliver maximum efficiency while maintaining reliability. Our industry has seen a proliferation of small projects focusing on testing emerging technologies before rolling out larger programs. The objectives of these innovative projects include enhanced grid utilization and reliability as well as interoperability of DERs. This session explores examples of projects that drive innovation as well as the successes and challenges utilities had to overcome.

3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Leveraging Distribution Technologies
Speakers: Haik Movsesian, PE, DER Planning Project Manager, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power
Matt Piper, Global Director of Industry Solutions: Utilities, Infrastructure & AEC, ESRI
Glenn Taylor, GIS Manager, Southern Company
This session will feature applied technology in Electric Utility Distribution Systems. Haik will speak about preparing the power distribution system for future by promoting DER programs, automating the distribution system, deploying large scale batteries, and by piloting new technologies. He will also present examples of recent installations of batteries (DER’s) on LADWP’s electric distribution system explaining operational challenges and opportunities of implementing battery technology. Part Two of this session will be co-presented by Matt Piper with ESRI giving an introduction to Esri Utility Network and Glen Taylor of Southern Company discussing an example of a GIS Utility Network Model, specifically how Southern Company utilized GIS technology to change traditional documentation of utility assets thus increasing accessibility and use of data for internal users.

10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Moving Beyond the Pilot
Speakers: Scott Hines, Lead Operator, Puget Sound
Eric Nunnally, Manager of Grid Technology Integration, Southern California Edison
Everything is a pilot now that DERs have arrived. Along with adoption of DERs, new processes and uses of technology & information are changing utility grid operations. How do utilities transform these pilots into its normal business? This session explores examples of pilot projects & processes that have grown into larger deployments, and examines the impacts/lessons learned along the way.

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Forced Innovation – Regulation and Industry Drivers
Speakers: Nate Hill, Manager of Regulatory policy, Puget Sound Energy
Shasta Culp, Vice President of Engineering, DHS Consulting, Inc.
Jon Jamieson, Transmission System Operator, Southern California Edison
Regulation and industry drivers challenge utilities to innovate and change while still maintaining operations. Recently these drivers are challenging utilities at a more accelerated rate than ever before. This session explores regulation and its unintended consequences in meeting regulation through innovation. It takes perspectives from regulatory, engineering, and operations to focus on not only challenges but also successes and lessons learned.
