The Mega Rule Deep Dive

The Mega Rule Deeper Dive: Engineering Analysis, Crack-like features, Corrosion and Seismicity. While the Mega Rule has been the subject of much attention in recent months, there remain multiple important topics that still warrant discussion and further understanding. The focus of this presentation will be to highlight, and provide a deeper-dive into topics of the Mega Rule (some of which were release as part of Phase 1 and others that will be a focus in Phase 2), such as engineering analysis approaches, fracture mechanics tools, corrosion control, and seismic considerations. The presentation will provide a review and expected implications of these Mega Rule components, as well as offering case studies highlighting specific experience, lessons learned, and best practices. Specifically, Pacific Gas & Electric Company and Exponent have collaborated to develop a pipeline feature-based fatigue crack growth calculation approach for the purpose of estimating remaining fatigue life and determining reassessment intervals. The fatigue crack growth approach developed can be executed using flaw sizes based on strength test results, as well as in-line inspection results. In addition to fracture mechanics and fatigue, engineering critical assessment, potential changes to corrosion regulations, and seismic considerations will be discussed, providing more insight for operators looking to align their integrity management programs with the new regulations.
