Utility Regulation + Ratemaking

Utility Regulation + Ratemaking courses provide an overview of various regulatory bodies and how they set rates.  
  • US Cost-of-Service: This course provides an overview of the role that State Public Utility Commissions have when setting customer rates for investor-owned electric and gas companies. Investor-owned utilities include privately owned entities and those with shares traded on stock markets. This model also generally applies to Cooperatives.
  • Publicly-Owned Utilities: This course provides an overview of the budgeting and rate approval process for utilities owned by the public, including municipally owned utilities and public utility districts.
  • Canadian Investor-Owned Utilities: This course provides the Provincial regulation and ratemaking process for privately-owned Canadian utilities, including Provincially Owned organizations such as BC Hydro. It is also used in Alberta to set electric transmission and gas transportation rates.
  • Performance-Based Rates: Rate regulation for electric and gas distribution utilities in Alberta is performed under a form of performance-based regulation. This course provides an overview of this process and the role of the Alberta Utilities Commission.
